Character Counts Initiative

CHARACTER COUNTS! was created by our friends at the non-profit organization called the Josephson Institute of Ethics based in Los Angeles. The program itself is non-sectarian, so it does not conform to any political or religious affiliation - and it is based on the idea that there are six basic universal human values crossing all cultures called the 6 pillars of Character:  Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, & Citizenship.  We enthusiastically promote these pillars and character education through media, workshops and events such as the CHARACTER COUNTS! In Klamath County week. We provide educators with resources, coaching and ideas on how to integrate the Six Pillars of Character into the classroom.  This type of messaging is a proactive way to prevent bullying and acts of aggression by getting students to see the value in treating others with respect and creating safe climates at school.

Character Builder Awards

Citizens for Safe Schools recognizes teachers or school programs for their outstanding contribution to building socially, morally and ethically strong students. We want to acknowledge this group or individual with a passion for teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling good character and who contributes to building a framework for our community that honors the six pillars of character.  To nominate a group or individual, call CFSS at 541-882-3198 or write to info@citizensforsafeschools.org

American Youth Character Award

Each year, with support from local sponsor AmeriTitle, CFSS honors six area students between the ages of 10-18 solely for their strength of character. These scholarship awards are not given for high grades, athletic accomplishment or acts of heroism - though these factors may be involved. To nominate a youth contact CFSS at 541-882-3198 or info@citizensforsafeschools.org

Annual Banquet

Each fall for 15 years we have hosted the CHARACTER COUNTS! and Mentoring Matters Banquet at the Running Y Ranch and Resort. This provides an opportunity for the community to support our efforts financially and learn more about what we do. While this is primarily a fundraising opportunity, we believe in returning value to the community in all we do. In that spirit, we provide a high quality keynote speaker for this event.  In the past, speakers have ranged from Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, to leading youth advocates, a county music star and even the reigning Miss America.  The annual banquet provides businesses with the opportunity to contribute as well by donating an item to our silent auction. Additionally, several businesses support the event by sponsoring it. The event will be BACK in 2017 and we can't wait!

Ed Caleb Memorial Golf Tournament

Our event features a great day of golf and LOTS of fun prizes and side contests. This is a perfect way to mingle, meet a mentor, and support Ed Caleb's legacy for our young people and our community in this exciting setting. Sponsorship packages are available to provide you added recognition and business opportunities at the event.

Town Halls

Citizens for Safe Schools is responsive to the ever changing needs of youth.  We know there is wisdom to be gained from gathering parents, educators and students together to talk about the most pressing issues of our time.  We believe hosting Town Hall Meetings to dialogue about what is going on in schools increases everyone's level of awareness regarding youth problems.  Have suggestions on a topic to be addressed at an upcoming Town Hall meeting? Email us at info@citizensforsafeschools.org

Our goal for 2017 is 75 mentors.

Our demand for responsible, caring adult mentors is very high. Research tells us over 40% of today’s youth lack the social supports needed to reach their academic and social potential. Ten percent of those are considered most at-risk. In Klamath County, that means over 400 kids desperately need our help. Give us a call to discuss how mentoring works. We need you!
